The stamp in the middle, issued in 1987, depicts a white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos). It is indigenus to areas of Europe and Asia. It has twelve subspecies. The male, shown here, has a red crown while the female has a black one. It feeds on insects, berries, nuts and seeds.

The Mongolian ground jay (Podoces hendersoni) stamp to the left of the cover was issued in 2001. The species lives in Central Asia and it feeds on lizards and insects as well as plant material.
